Mission Specialist: Bruce E.
Melnick (Cmdr., USCG). Bruce Melnick was born in New York,
New York, but considers Clearwater, Florida, to be his hometown.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the U.S.
Coast Guard Academy and a master of science degree in
aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida. He
served seven years as a Coast Guard rescue pilot and later
conducted many of the tests on the Coast Guard's HH-65A "Dolphin"
helicopter. He has logged over 4,900 flying hours, mostly in
helicopters and T-38 aircraft. Melnick flew two space missions
while with NASA.

I had the privilege to
be at the ceremony .The base personnel were very gracious and
helpful.
Everything went well and
it was a terrific morning. The thing that struck me was there were
some of us oldtimers, active duty people from ATC and by chance a
group of cadets from the Acadamy(Class of 2002), all I have
rambled on before about
The folks that have been
there, the ones who are there, and those to come. I felt a great
swelling of pride to remember what we are all about.
There were others
honored that day and there will be definately more to come. All
part of our great brotherhood.

In the middle is Cmdr.Melnick
Astronaut. On his left is yours truly Astro Nut, and on the right
is my keeper Ms.Hevey.
Years ago before there was a Coastguard
astronaut I used to tell anyone who would listen, that they
needed Coasties in the space program or else there wouldn't be
anyone to rescue space ships in distress or to run the celestial
aids to navigation.

OUR NEXT COASTGUARDSMAN IN SPACE

A more
somber part of Coastguard Day
2000
A
tribute to our comrades who did not return,,this memorial was
dedicated at the Elizabeth City NC complex on August fourth 2000.

In a very moving,emotional
ceremony, the names of all of our fellow crewmembers "who did
not return" were read

Official Party: Captain James S. Thomas,
Rear Admiral Terry M. Cross,
Chaplain Alan L. Andraeas and Congressman Walter B. Jones

There
is no greater sacrifice than a man giving his life in the service
of his fellowmen

Portland Maine had the
honor to celebrate the Coastguards birthday with the men of the
Bark Eagle

A view of the Eagle entering Portland Harbor
from Portland Head Light
This is a great picture of the lighthouse.

While we are on a page about space flight I wanted to go this way

But I
guess the only way I'll get there is " this a way "!!!!
